Do you need to believe in acupuncture for it to work?
Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is recognized by the World Health Organization as an effective form of treatment with very few side effects. Occasionally minor bleeding or bruising may occur at the site of needling. Some patients may find their symptoms initially get worse before resolving, this is viewed as a healing crisis and is considered a positive result of treatment.
Does acupuncture hurt?
The needles are very fine so cause minimal discomfort, occasionally you may feel the needles when they are first inserted. Many patients are pleasantly surprised and find acupuncture very relaxing.
What does acupuncture feel like?
There are different sensations which may occur during treatment, a dull ache, a tingling sensation or a heaviness around the points are all quite common. Sometimes patients get sensations along the meridians as the qi/energy rebalances within the system.
How will I feel after treatment?
Most patients feel quite calm and relaxed following treatment. Some patients may feel sleepy and tired. Symptoms may improve following treatment or may temporarily get worse if a healing crisis occurs.
How many treatments will be necessary?
The number of treatments required will vary dependent on the condition. Some conditions such as muscle injuries can improve within 1-2 treatments. Many conditions may be resolved/improved within 4-6 treatments. Chronic conditions may require a course of treatment initially to get symptoms under control followed by regular top up treatments to maintain the stability and prevent deterioration of a condition.
What kind of needles are used?
The needles are very fine single use pre-sterilized disposable needles. All needles are safely disposed of following each treatment. Members of the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture U.K. (ATCM) follow strict hygiene protocols during all treatments.
Can I get cross infection from acupuncture?
This practice only uses single use pre sterilised needles to avoid any risk of cross infection. All equipment is disinfected after each individual treatment and the treatment clinic is disinfected after each clinic session in accordance with the ATCM hygiene protocol.
