Moxibustion is an important and perhaps under-utilised therapeutic method in traditional Chinese medicine. Using this therapy heat, as well as the properties of the moxa itself, serves to warm qi and blood. It may be used to expel pathogens such as cold and can be used to help regulate the internal organs and restore health. Moxa can also be used to boost the immune system and is particularly good for “deficiency conditions” or when immunity is compromised.
Moxibustion can be administered as an individual therapy or can be used in conjunction with acupuncture. In all cases, heat is generated by burning Mugwort (a perennial plant that is a member of the daisy family).
At Hanmer Holistic Healing application is by either burning a moxa stick close to (but not in contact with) an acupuncture point, or by fixing a moxa cone to the end of an acupuncture needle. Heat then passes through and stimulates the acupuncture point.
